Vital medical supplies have started to reach India, now the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, with the number of dead approaching 200,000.
The UK has sent equipment including 100 ventilators and 95 oxygen concentrators to the capital, New Delhi, as hospitals suffering a lack of oxygen and beds have been turning away COVID-19 patients.
France is providing eight oxygen generating plants; Ireland, Germany and Australia are sending oxygen concentrators and ventilators; the US has also pledged aid; and the World Health Organisation says it’s working to deliver 4,000 oxygen concentrators to help India combat the coronavirus.
But after mass gatherings, more contagious variants and low vaccination rates sparked record infections in India, for many the aid will arrive too late.
