NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – It was 65 years ago April 28, at 7:00 p.m., that TV6 started broadcasting.
The first show was Peninsula on Parade. Back in 1956, WLUC-TV6 was on TV as WDMJ.
Frank Russell essentially created WLUC. He owned Upper Michigan newspapers and radio stations and now he ventured moving into television.
Television has changed the world. From its early days of pre-recorded variety shows, to today’s instant look at what’s happening, our world is much smaller.
The technology has been the biggest change over the 6-plus decades at TV6. In the early days, programs were live from our studio, plus what we received from New York. The bulk of what you saw were entertainment programs, but the station did news about Upper Michigan each night.
This station grew rapidly in the early 1960s. We changed our identity to WLUC-TV6, and moved from downtown Marquette to the current location on US-41 in Negaunee Township.
WLUC-TV6 has been always been about community.
Those early days of Finland Calling would bring hundreds of people to the station on a Sunday morning and thousands more watching from home.
The TV6 Canathon started in 1982 and continues today, though virtually during the pandemic, helping feed a hungry neighbor in their time of need.
Plus, there were even telethons.
TV6 has brought you countless news specials over the years. Among them, the destructive floods in Houghton County. And there’s Discovering with the late Buck LeVassuer, a program that’s still around today with host Brian Whitens.
TV6 and the younger FOX UP bring you Upper Michigan news around the clock, and again technology is pushing us forward.

As we celebrate our anniversary, we’re also celebrating the retirement of longtime TV6 Anchor, Greg Trick. On Friday, May 7, Trick ends his 30-year career at TV6. Join us for a special TV6 News Tonight newscast at 7:00 p.m. eastern for his farewell.
