Like just about everything else, the past year has certainly turned the sports world upside down.

From youth leagues to the pros, schedules have changed, seasons have been lost and through it all, we’ve seen athletes of all ages persevere. It’s with that in mind I’d also like to use this month’s column to give credit to our sports staff.

A year ago, we watched as games were taken off the fields and courts in Newport County. This would seem like an opportunity to put sports on hiatus, but that was never the case and a lot of the credit goes to reporter Steve Rogers and Digital Editor Scott Barrett. Thanks to them, we haven’t missed a beat on the sports pages.

Quickly, Steve found ways to adapt our sports coverage with a series on local college athletes who had returned home and found ways to stay sharp, while maintaining their academics from — in some cases — their childhood bedrooms.

As it became clear the games would not return last spring, our sports coverage didn’t let up and we continued to tell you the stories of people we usually are rooting for — or maybe against.

Then as sports started to return in the fall, we were right there and with the success of the stories we told in the spring, it led to a slight shift in our approach to sports coverage.

While we’ve continued to provide game coverage, it’s usually been in a shorter form. We want to make sure you’ve got all the scores and the biggest highlights from the games, but we also wanted to continue to tell you more. We want to dig deeper into the players and coaches you see on the field and courts, while also getting you ready for the biggest games.

As an example, I’ll point to the past two weeks or so. 

During this time, we talked with former Portsmouth High School football players about what it was like to go up against Kwity Paye, who was selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

We highlighted three Tiverton High School students who decided to play football for the first time, while also bringing you the stories of Rogers High School’s Sophie Breitenbach and Portsmouth’s Megan Lehane, who have been killing it on the volleyball court this season. 

We also had full coverage of the Rogers/Middletown rivalry game and what it was like for parents to get to watch their children play again.

And, really, this list scratches the surface.

If you don’t always flip over to or click on the sports section, here’s a good opportunity, because you’re going to get much more than scores and game recaps. You’ll also get to know the next generation of Newport County residents.

All of this adds up to what I see as the most comprehensive coverage of sports you’ll find in Newport County and something I hope you’re enjoying.
