Bellwood-Antis’ Connor Gibbons looks to get by Claysburg-Kimmel’s Hunter Ehredt Friday night.

A week after taking their first loss of the season to Juniata Valley, Bellwood-Antis got back on track with a 25-8 victory over Claysburg-Kimmel on Friday evening at Mansion Park.
In true Blue Devil fashion, Bellwood ran the ball for 335 yards on a wet night, including senior running back Connor Gibbons running for 250 yards.
Although it was the run game that highlighted the night for Bellwood, Cooper Keen caught two huge touchdowns, including one as time expired in the first half that put the Blue Devils up, 19-8.
Play of the game: Bellwood stopped Claysburg deep in their own end and called timeouts on three consecutive plays late in the first half. After the Bulldogs punted, the Blue Devils had six seconds remaining. Quarterback Zach Pellegrine threw a tight end screen pass to Keen, who raced 37 yards for a touchdown to end the first half and gave the Blue Devils a huge momentum swing going into halftime.
Player of the game: Gibbons pounded the rock for 250 yards on 30 carries for the night, and scored a touchdown from five yards out on the last play of the third quarter.
Unsung hero: Not only was fullback Cooper Guyer the lead blocker for Gibbons’ big night, but he also spelled the lead back well with 70 yards on 11 carries after spending last week on the offensive line due to injuries.
Most vital statistic: Out of Gibbons’ 30 carries, 11 of them went for 10 yards or more. He only lost yards on three of them.
Bellwood-Antis head coach Nick Lovrich: “We were biting at the bit to play a game and get last week off our minds. I thought our kids played really well. We probably need to finish a little better down towards the end zone, but I thought our kids made some really big plays tonight.”
Claysburg-Kimmel head coach Matt Bilchak: “We knew going in that Bellwood was a really competitive team, and they’ve been the team to beat over the last couple years. But we told our kids we need to focus on us, and execute our gameplan and prepare for the playoffs. We have to just do the things to be ready for our (class), and I think we did that tonight.”
Bellwood-Antis’ Cooper Keen: “We needed that loss (last week) to really wake us up. We really worked our butts off all week long. We came back and made a statement.”
Notable: Claysburg-Kimmel pulled off a trick play for a 2-point conversion in the second quarter. With the offensive line split out to the left, holder Caleb Oakes threw the ball to Cole Claycomb behind the line, and Claycomb got through the line and into the end zone to give the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead. … Claycomb rushed for 81 yards on seven carries, and Oakes threw for 107 yards on the night.
Records: The Blue Devils finish the regular season at 9-1, while Claysburg ended at 4-6.
Next week: Both teams will await their opponents in the District 6 playoffs. Bellwood will be in the AA bracket, while the Bulldogs will compete in Class A.
