CLYMER — Entering the Appalachian Bowl against Windber Saturday at Penns Manor High School, the Cambria Heights football team wanted to set the tempo early and control the line of scrimmage.

An early score against and several turnovers, however, didn’t bode well for the reigning Heritage Conference champions.

Cambria Heights turned the ball over four times and allowed almost 400 yards against as it fell to the still-unbeaten Ramblers, 42-0.

“We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities that we did have,” Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis said. “We knew coming in that we were playing a strong defense, and their offense is good as well. We knew it was going to be a challenge. We wanted to win the turnover battle and play a clean game. We weren’t able to do that tonight.”

Player of the game: Windber running back Nick Dom, who scored three touchdowns while carrying the ball 10 times for 150 yards. Dom provided the Ramblers a 14-0 lead in the opening minute of the second quarter with an 83-yard touchdown run, and he provided scoring runs of 10 and 14 yards in the fourth quarter.

Play of the game: On the first offensive play of the game, Windber running back John Schuster swept outside of his tackles and darted downfield for an 83-yard score. The play proved to be the game-winning touchdown just 19 seconds into the game.

“I don’t think we came out lined up correctly on that play,” Lewis said. “That’s on me. Giving up a touchdown early in a game like this is tough, and it makes you feel like you’re playing catch up.”

Unsung heroes: Cambria Heights senior lineman Bailey Horvath, who blocked the extra-point attempt on Shuster’s opening touchdown run and blocked a Windber punt late in the first quarter… Cambria Heights corner Tanner Trybus thwarted a Rambler drive in the second quarter with an interception in the red zone.

Costly turnover: Trailing 21-0 coming out of halftime, Cambria Heights fielded the second-half kickoff and was prepared to drive down the field and cut the deficit to a two-score game. On the return, the ball was knocked loose out of Trybus’ arms and recovered by the Ramblers. Windber scored moments later with a 2-yard run by Dylan Tomlinson.

Most vital statistic: Cambria Heights rushed for less than 100 yards for the first time this season.

Windber coach Matt Grohal: “Obviously we wanted to stop (Cambria Heights running back Ryan) Haluska in the two and three holes. They are big and physical up front, and we challenged our guys. I thought if we could stop them in the two or three hole, it would force them to go somewhere else. (Haluska) had a lot of carries and probably had a lot of yards, but he had to work for them tonight. That was the game plan coming in: take him out of the game, and we figured we would have a pretty good chance.”

Lewis: “We’ll be fine. The senior leadership that has gotten us to this point is the same leadership that we’ll lean on going forward. We’re a proud group, and I think the kids kept battling and kept fighting until the end.”

Dom: “(Cambria Heights) was a good, hard-hitting football team. We needed our line to do what they do, week-in and week-out.”

Notable: Windber became the first WestPAC team to win the Appalachian Bowl since the crossover game returned in 2016. Ligonier Valley won the first four editions of the game from 2016 to 2019. The game was not played last year due to COVID-19.

Records: Cambria Heights (9-1); Windber (9-0).

Next week: No. 1 Cambria Heights hosts No. 8 Forest Hills Friday in the District 6 Class 2A playoffs. It will be the first time Cambria Heights ever hosts a District 6 playoff game; No. 2 Windber hosts No. 3 Berlin-Brothersvalley Friday in the District 5 Class 2A playoffs.
